Swinburne history book celebrates 100 years
As part of the Swinburne 2008 Centenary Celebrations, the University has released a history of the institution, Practical Measures - 100 Years at Swinburne.
Written by Swinburne historian Peter Love, with assistance from Sara Jervis, the book gives a wonderful insight into the history of the institution that will appeal to people both within and outside of the university.
George Swinburne founded the Eastern Suburbs Technical College in 1908. In the century since, the college, which quickly adopted the name of its founder, has grown to become today's Swinburne University of Technology.
This book sets Swinburne's story firmly in the context of the last one hundred years of Melbourne's history. George Swinburne's original interest in technical education and his firm belief in self improvement, and the broader social benefits of an educated populace have underpinned the university's approach to education throughout its history.
As it approaches its centenary, Swinburne continues to expand on its strengths of its past and has grown to around 40,000 students and 2000 staff, with five campuses around Melbourne and one in Malaysia.
As the university moved through changing social, economic and political environments, including the Great Depression, two World Wars and significant government policy shifts, Swinburne has remained true to its founder's vision that a skilled and educated citizenry is necessary for nation building.
Despite the significant changes that Swinburne has undergone over the last one hundred years, the institution has remained consistent in its approach to a vision that has been foundation of its many successes.
The author's deep understanding of Swinburne, its culture and the consistency of its mission in a changing world, shine through in the text and a myriad of interesting images from the Swinburne archives provide a pictorial history.
Designed and illustrated by Swinburne designers Peter Buchholz and Lisa Stanton, the book Practical Measures - 100 Years at Swinburne is now available for purchase.
The recommended retail price is $39.95 plus postage for purchases using the order form at www.tertiarypress.com.au/SwinHistoryOrderForm.pdf
